Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments made by captain Stokes about the dressing room not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered this message in several conversations following his team's loss in the second Ashes series against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

However, following Crawley made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a notional target of 435.

This means, the home team require four wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's drought in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in just eleven days of play – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be tough coming here against them. They entered as the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's innings in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his modest returns against the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

However, Crawley said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is noise from the outside. There's no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley finished.
